I don't believe this setting will affect data being written to network drives, only local ones.
Not knowing what type of network card/cabling is being used, I suggest checking 'transmit/receive window' settings for your network card. Also, are the drive mappings permanent, are they defined by a script, or do the users establish them manually? Do drive mappings change during the day?
