Hi Thomas,
While I'm still worried and will do more checking, I am comforted by the following:
1) POST does say 2048
2) While System Information only reports "Tootal physical memory" as 1024 MB, it does report "Available physical memory" as 1.45 MB
3) SiSoftware Sandra reports "Total physical meemory" as 2048MB and ""Free physical memory" as 1460MB
On the other hand, "dual channel" is involved and the original memory was specifically dual channel while the added was not (though the seller did say it is, by Kingston's own info (which I did not see)).
It feels like the stuff is in use, but of course that's very subjective.
If I find anything else, I'll let you know.
cheers and thanks
PS for NeilMcD: (a) the BIOS did reset itself and I did have to twiddle, but mainly to do with boot drive), and (b) I did unplug power before delving into innards.
Thanks to you too
