I'm not saying that Israel's history is clean, but in the past recent years, it seems that they are in a defensive position.

In this case, there's always a previous atrocity commited by the other side. If you accept the logic of looking for "who attacked first", you'd probably have to conclude that they're fighting in vain, because it's Romans who are to blame, and their empire is long gone.
