The Chicago Democratic machine isn't what it used to be. The city still votes heavily Democratic but it is a lot more political preference than coercion. What may be less noticed elsewhere is that the city is surrounded by "collar counties" that vote Republican. Including Lake County, where I live now. I have already learned to avoid political discussions with my new neighbors. Nice enough folks, just "Bush country" / "Reagan country" reflexive Republicans. There was a funny moment a few months ago. I was out back mowing the lawn and stopped to chat with the lady on the other side of the fence. Somehow Michael Moore's name came up and we realized neither of us considers him the antichrist. (As do so many who have never even seen any of his movies). She laughed and said we better not let the neighbors find out.
