I'm sorry. There's something in relationships that I call the lowest common denominator. The relationship can only be as much, or exist at the least level that one of the persons allow. If he does not let it be more, than there's not much you can do. Again, I'm sorry your going through this. It doesn't mean much now, but time will take care of it.
