I dunno if he's wrong, but you only need one CAL for each version of Windows Server, no matter how many servers they connect to. In other words, CALs are not per server, but per version of the server. So, one CAL per user for all Win2K servers and another CAL per user for all Win2K3 servers.

One other thing...and Microsoft keeps changing this...it used to be that you only needed a CAL if you used file and print services. Last time I checked, you needed a CAL if you just connected to the server.

I talked to the SQL Server admin where I normally work (I consult on the side), he said that as long as they don't use Windows Authentication, the 5 basic CALs should work. Is he wrong on this? I want to be sure this is on the up and up.
