in college we were always told that to be safe a fact was something that could be proven so that no matter what side of the fence you sat you could not dispute the result, this was for my bsc. interpreting the facts are open to personal beliefs/slants so i am not sure that you can say that just because several sources state a point that it is fact, but i suppose you can say based on reputiple sources we assume that following to be fact. once you clearly list your assumptions, such as taking something as fact based on the good sources, then it should be ok, you just have to be able to stand in front of the peer group and convince them too!
