I'm with you that it's gotten pathetic in how people don't take responsibility for their own decisions anymore. 40 years ago, that might have been a (somewhat) reasonalbe argument, but now? If you don't know most of the bad things for you, then you just don't want to know. Or you're lying.
As far as the company goes, they have to say that, but I know what you mean.
