As Neil mentioned, perhaps setting specific locations would serve you better. In development, on Windows XP, I use the below settings in my config.fpw:
_GENMENU = "C:\GENMENUX\GENMENUX.PRG"
RESOURCE=C:\programnotes\vfp\FOXUSER9.DBF
RESOURCE=ON
TMPFILES=C:\TEMP
CONFIRM=ON
BELL=OFF
MULTILOCKS=OFF
EXCLUSIVE=OFF
STATUS BAR = ON
TIME=999999
LOGNAME=GETENV("LOGNAME")
LOGNAME=getenv('USERNAME')
HELP=ON
BELL=OFF
DEVELOPMENT=ON
ESCAPE=ON
MVCOUNT=1400
MEMLIMIT=80,1024,1024
EDITWORK=C:\programnotes\vfp9\TMP\
PROGWORK=C:\programnotes\vfp9\TMP\
SORTWORK=C:\programnotes\vfp9\TMP\
RESOURCE=C:\programnotes\vfp9\foxuser9.DBF
TMPFILES=C:\programnotes\vfp9\TMP\
CODEPAGE=auto
DEFAULT=\programs\cad
PATH=\programs\cad\data
command=do \programnotes\maxscreen9.prg
In the desktop shortcut, I use:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9\vfp9.exe" -cc:\programnotes\vfp9\config.fpw
to specify the config.fpw file I want to use. When running an app (to emulate a user) I typically place the config.fpw in the same directory as the .exe or specify one in the desktop shortcut as well. Note that I specify the location of the foxuser.dbf in the config.fpw.

>Well it looks like the answers here put me on the right track - but I'm still confused. I had to put some trace code in the application and recompile it. It now tells me that sys(2003) is pointing to c:\windows\system32 in win XP, while in win98 it's pointing to the same directory where the exe is located.
