Try putting a . (yes a .) in the box. This indicates the default SQL Server instance. Does this help?

Also try to run this from a dos command line.

osql /E /q "Select * from northwind.dbo.customers"

Does it return any results?

Once its finished use the exit command to get back to the command line.
