>>Well, the few places I've been to that actually offer a smaller portion tend to price it lower than the larger one. I'm not sure that proportional to size is the right formula, since preparation is probably the same, as is the cost of serving, cleaning up, etc.

>If the portions are lower, then the price should be too. Here's a novel idea too: If someone thinks there's too much on their plate or in their bag, then maybe they should just not eat all of it. Why does the restaurant have to diet for us? No one takes personal responsibility anymore.

Sure, that's always a possibility (leave what's too much).

But I do see some pluses to restaurants serving smaller portions.
1. They just might be able take the savings and apply them to better quality oil or food in general.
2. They just might be able to take the savings and pay their staff a little better.
3. They'd garbage less food.
4. They'd need less variety of cups, containers, etc (all smaller = fewer choices).

I was at a very fancy restaurant the other night. The food (which was excellent) was lost on the plate. It was mainly plate with a little "pile" in the middle. Funny thing, but I was filled when I finished!

cheers
