Now that sounds like HD trouble - either trying to read from a nearly dead sector or trying to find "clean" sectors to write on.

Save erveryting (neccessary for jumpingt to new HW anyhow) *chkdisk* / defrag a few times. Best with a tool that supports rearranging files.
