With pessimistic locking you can also execute a "replace myval with myval" to lock the record.
FP handles pessimistic locking better than most systems, especially those that use page locking and can paralyse many records if one record is locked. But IMHO there are usually good reasons to use Optimistic locking. The notorious "lunch lock" is one reason (pessimistic-lock user locks record and walks away, leaving record inaccessible) and optimistic locking does allow ways to manage contention.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
