OK..professor at a school..that's a bit different.

In businesses, many have a strict policy that employees cannot be a reference or provide a letter of recommendation to people because if they don't get the job, the company can be sued. As a result, most businesses will only confirm if a person worked between the dates specified on a resume and what their salary was...and that information must come from HR.
