Luckily this is not the end of the world, but I'll keep trying a little longer. Googling for info I ran into an item that said that Microsoft Photo Editor has an internal jpg viewer. That might make it a potential security problem and would explain why MS would close the hole.

Thanks fro the reply, Yuri,

Alex

>Other than that, can you make jpg file in MS Photo Editor, say, when SAVEAS the existing bmp file? If so, then can you open this jpg from PhotoEditor?

>Also, you may try to uninstall PhotoEditor (I believe, it is in MS Office tools that can be excluded and added separately), then review the Windows registry and remove all references to PhotoEditor. And add PhotoEditor again via MS Office installation procedure.

>>>What do you mean, "I can not open jpg files with Microsoft Photo Editor"? Any errors?
>>
>>Microsoft Photo Editor was the application I've had associated with jpg and jpeg files. Some time ago (perhaps a month) I was able to open those files by double clicking them and often did that with pictures contained in a zip file. A few days ago I tried to double click on a jpg file contained inside a zip file and got a message "Can't open file". After trying various combinations I discovered that I got the same message when trying to open unzipped jpg files. I can still open jpg files with Microsoft Office Picture Manager, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, Paint, and Internet Explorer, so the problem occurs with Microsoft Photo Editor only.
>>
>>The reason I continue trying to use Microsoft Photo Editor is because it is able to open several photos contained in a zip file in the same instance of Microsoft Photo Editor. Microsoft Office Picture Manager opens a separate instance for each photo, and this is not very practical. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer works great if the photos are extracted to a directory, but not while the photos are still in the zip file. It can only view one photo at a time if they are inside a zip file.
>>
>>A possible cause of the problem is Office 2007 beta that I installed about 10 days ago. I have since unisntalled everything except Outlook, because it apparently has a different file format than Outlook XP and you can't go back! I also reinsalled Microsoft Photo Editor from the Office XP CD but no results.
>>
>>Another cause of the problem may be a recent Windows security patch.
>>
>>>
>>>Can you right_click on the file in the Windows explorer and see what is the application associated with jpg file? Can you CHANGE the application associated with this file?
>>
>>If I change the application used to open the file I get the results described above, same as if I chose Open with...
