When is a SQL created cursor released?

By that I mean with are the resources in the form of memeory and swap files (for big data sets) released.

I observe that a USE, if the cursor is active, removes it form the data view window, but are the resources released?

I thought it might be when the calling program is closed, but tests do not support this idea.

Thanks,
