A lot depends on the printer you use. If it's not producing enough contrast, if resolution is insufficient, you may have problems. As Tore said, try with a larger barcode font, or just a wider one. Increase the size of the font until you start getting fast scans. Taller font will just make it easier for the user to aim the scanner; the wider font will require less resolution from your printer.

I've even printed barcodes on a dot-matrix printer in my time, and it needs fresh ribbon quite often. While everything else may be readable to human eye, the barcode needs to be quite contrastful for a successful scan.
