It seems that in jokes (and probably otherwise), the Germans considered their Italian allies as cowards. I have no idea how close this perception was to reality. One joke I remember well (origin: German, during the war) said that Italy had given Greece an ultimatum. If they didn't surrender, Germany would attack immediately.
