Another thing I've noticed is that when you're included in a several person reply list, you'll get an e-mail and the message is counted, but yours doesn't show in the main list of threads unless you are the main person being responded to. This would make the count seem different than what you may actually see, especially if there are a lot of those.
But you may have another real problem altogether, especially since you also say that sometimes you get a blank screen when you try to reply. Sorry I can't be of some help.
