I couldn't agree more with Tamar. "The Fundamentals" is just that. Caveat ēmptor, however, since 1) the actual book is out of print (but available as an e-book through Hentzenwerke.com) and 2)it was written for VFP 6.0. Having said that, it is still a classic in that it will walk a developer/user through the steps to create a full blown application. Speaking of "classics", Tamar's (along with Ted Roche) "Hacker's Guide to Visual FoxPro" is another great book, particularly for, as you have requested, a basic (as well as a more detailed) explanation of the VFP syntax. The edition for VFP 6.0 is the "telephone books" of VFP technical tomes, but well worth the investment and an excellent compliment to "The Fundamentals". Those two books should allow your user to become familiar with the basics and if desired, point them to the updated versions of the books (that were necessitated when VFP made its way from Ver. 6.0 through Ver. 9.0).
