I'm sorry to hear that things were rough. I generally know how you feel.

Out of curiosity, did you "up and quit", or give notice? If you don't have anything specific lined up...not to be preachy, but remember that it's generally easier to find a new job (and/or negotiate salary for a new job) when you have an existing one.
