Sure the NSU Ro 80 was something special, but knowadays only Mazda uses rotary engines AFAIK.

Still not sure if the same engineering effort (from turbo chargers to [extra sparse] electronic fuel injection) which made current engines so much more competitive might not have produced a spectacular engine from the rotary.
