In my company back home we soon discovered that we need not just an inventory, but inventory by parts, with serial numbers of everything. It was quite easy to get something lost among the office machines and machines for sale, because you may have done something on a local disk on one machine, go visit a customer, sit back at the same machine and discover that it's got a new disk... the old one being sold. Or with no disk at all, for the same reason... :).

Even though cannibalizing one machine to compose a cheaper one for a customer maybe took just ten minutes, our engineer had to do one extra minute to type the info into an app (or was it a spreadsheet maybe) so we'd have trace of that disk, or a CD drive, or monitor or whatever. And we also learned never to save anything on a local disk... do everything on office server, or your work may get lost without notice.
