If you meant import, you may then examine the table using afields function to get fields names into array. If you're using APPEND FROM then the table must exist in advance.
I have another function of converting Excel into DBF and producing structure table. Unfortunately, sometimes some fields map to wrong types/dimensions. Anyway, let me know if you want this function.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
