Just come to realise that I've never used form vars before - and the reason why - they're so confusing

So after much struggling and swearing I've managed that. Thanks Naomi and Sergey. Sergey, for once you were pipped at the post. :-)

>You put Trip1 for the first variable, select Sum as an option and reset at group level. E.g. it's almost the same as creating the calculated field, except that you're creating it as a variable. Call it nTrip1, for example.

>>Thank you, bless you but what do I put in the var's? Sure they need to refer to the group total field but how do I refer to a field that hasn't a name but is the sum() of a group column.

>>>Simple. You really need two report variables for this.

So the values (in the 1st 2 totals: 370 and 400) are calculated, via Report Expression dialog, by the total fields being the same as the cursor fields: Trip1 and Trip2 (i.e their columns) and, via teh "Calculations" button -> Calculate Field dialog and "Sum" radio button selected.
