Not counting the thousands that continued to die until the fall of Saigon in 1975, the victorious North forced hundreds of thousands of former South Vietnamese soldiers, politicians, and their families into "re-education" camps. Estimates of the number of deaths run in excess of 65,000. In addition, nearly two million tried to escape the country, many losing their lives in the process.
