Sure, they scrubbed an cleaned and tidied and cooked and ran errands and brought up the kids, etc. 7:00 to 23:00, while the men got good exercise, worked for a set number of hours (or hung around pool halls) then came home expecting to be waited on, their wives "paying" the piper for his largesse in keeping them.
