Lebaneese government did NOT have that kind of choice ...
If they were able to do it I am sure they would. Nobody wants radical
elements rising into power.
Apart from this being impossible politically, Lebanon does not hv sufficient army force capable of doing such thing anyway, at least not right now.

Country was governed basically by Syrians for (30?) years. Then everybody saw popular uprising seeking independance and democracy for Lebanon.
Forced by International comunity - Syria left. (hence 10.000 rockets!)
Things started to move on for better but gradually as process. Given more time - Hesbollah wld hv to come into terms with new situation/reality, where both Syria and Israel are out, country is independent/democratic and foremost that - fight is over. They wld have to eighter pacify (Like IRA)
or face illegal status, prosecutions etc.
But it takes time to establish real democracy and all state mechanisams (controled army, police etc) necessary to take full control over entire country. If this was already done, then this wld hv been 100% legit request by Israel.

Don't forget that Hesbollah is strong movement, priced by meny in Lebanon as local heroes being ONLY resistance movement against (up to yesterdays) occupier - Israel. Despite meny bad a**es amongst them - they are not ALL radical DreamingAboutJihad muslims. (As depicted sucessfully bu Israel). Meny of them got into it from genuine patriotic/resistance reasons rather then Jihad or Dirst for Westerners blood. It is US/Israel considering it terrorist group - not the whole world.
[Dont mix this for my aproval for flying rockets to people homes or kidnappings etc ]

Israel of course have right to defend itself, But this what has been done
right now is WAAAY out of proportion. It might end up being highly contraproductive and turn into long term nightmare for Israel - rather then real defence. That is why I am confused about real intentions/goals for whole thing. Why wld Israel shot himself in the foot (let aside burning neighbour's house over a dog's bite), unless it is part of some greater plan.

>Lebanon's Government (i.e. the people as it is a democracy), didi not deal with their own terrorists, or ask for assistance if they couldn't do it themselves. Remember that UN Resolution 1559 stated that Israel would leave (which they did) and Lebabon would disarm and control Hezbollah (which they did not). If they could not comply with UN Resolution because of their own governmental or military weakness, they should have asked for UN troops to be stationed along the border since that resolution and take care of the problem (and the cost) of disarming them.
>Israel has the right to defend their existence and their people and fight against terrorism. If Lebanon (and Syria) were interested in stopping terrorism they would have done it already.
