Unfortunately for them, that territory is the holy land of Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike. That's the crux of the matter. I am not anti-Israel but it would probably be a lot more peaceful if they were a little more willing to share.
Prior to 1967, Jews had no access to the old city of Jerusalem, containing Jewish holy sites. After the 6-Day War, the city was opened to the world. The Israelis are willing to share.
