Yeah I've delt with the same situation not to long ago myself. In my case the code was written by 5 or 6 different developers, all of which had their own programming styles that were very different from the others - making the task even more of a pain.
Other times I've had to deal with this I've been lucky enough that it was just one persons code, and I simply tried to conform to their standards, so at least the code was consistant (so hopefully the guy that came along behind me wouldn't have a bigger mess....)
