Statistically, two things were proven (before internet, unfortunately, can't supply a link): working mothers are better mothers, measured in percentages of academic success of their children, crime rate among their children, children's overall health and few other parameters. The other is that divorce rate in the Bible belt is significantly higher than in other states - you can find that one by googling "bible belt divorce rate statistics".

In a family where both parents work, they set a better example to their children, by bringing home news from work, talking about them in front of the children, discussing various people they meet. In a family where only one parent works, the other has not much of other connection to the world but neighborhood gossip and the media.
