Why not simply holding the name of the BMP file that is the actual picture instead of using a general field ? I am not sure I perfectly understood why you need to ZAP, but indeed you're problem is actually rooted in the fact that you need to gain exclusive access to a table ... so why not getting rid of this exclusive access by handling simple strings (a BMP filename) ?
