Do not use SP to generate GUIDs when you're running this task.
PS: I forgot to tell, you said along the lines RI triggers were not firing before tableupdate. Yes it's the expected behavior but it doesn't matter, at the end they're firing. If they're firing to validate data that you already know is valid then come to think of it (but I know your tendency is to be conservative at all times).
