My daughter came up with quite a good use for machine translation: to get some rough idea on what the text is about - it will replace unknown words with known ones, sufficient to get it. Of course, it helps that she already speaks three languages, so she knows the pitfalls where programming just can't get around the differences between the ordering of words in a sentence etc, so she does some post-processing in her head.

That's, of course, still very far from getting an usable text that you can publish :).
