I'm sure lots of people would have jumped at the chance to have one. The technology just didn't exist yet.

One very interesting technological advance was the ATM machine. It was a classic example of the power of a new device not being initially understood. At first the machines were quite literally automated teller machines, replacements for standing in a teller's line at a bank. They were available only in bank lobbies during banking hours. The true benefit, being able to get cash any time, anywhere, didn't come until later.
