Aptly put Craig!

>Part of the problem is that even with frameworks, software factories, etc, software development is still mostly one-off work. You do something one time and it's put into use. The next thing you work on is different, even if it's modifications to the first program. Many managers feel that programming is like assembly line work and expect that it's easy and done the same way everytime. Programming is like engineering and art, yet at the same time it's neither.

>Have you ever seen a circus/carnival act where a man has several long sticks and a plate on the end of each. As long as the plate is spinning, it stays on the stick. If it slow down too much, it falls off. The performer runs around from one stick to another, trying to keep all the plates spinning. Eventually, he can't keep up and plates start to fall off and break. That's very much like programming. There's lots to do and difficult to keep it all going at the same time.
