Hi Bonnie, problem over, my fault !, since migrating to 2005 I've been doing lots of cutting and pasting creating new classes etc..., my base class code which prevents manual changes to the checkbox was being set (locked - which means any attempt to set it will fail )after the fist item was checked, sorry for wasting your time
