It is true that you can't have the whole functionality with views as you have with direct tables (well, not at the same performance anyway)
but then if you are considering moving to c/s you'd have the exact same
problems and the practives you have with views are the ones you need for c/s
depending on your system you may be able to keep some non-frequently changing tables on the local machines and still have lookup tables etc.
but then you have other issues like syncronization
