Hi Luis,

you've been getting some great advice.

I started programming when I wanted some data analyzed while in grad school (psychology), and the head of the computer center (a smart guy, got his PhD at Stanford at age 20) told me to go learn Fortran and do it myself. <s>

Things were easier then, compared to now. There was less complexity. In three weeks I went through the IBM self-teaching books and was back at the computer center punching cards. Once I learned how to use the card punching machine. <g>

My experience is that in any field involving complexity, it takes 3 years after learning the basics to become proficient, 10 years to reach the first peak. I've seen it done faster, but by someone who whizzed through all the MS exams reading the books at the bar (IOW, someone as smart as the computer center head who told me to go learn Fortran on my own); while there a quite a few people on the UT who are in that league, the rest of us have to adjust our timeframes and plod along.

That's the downside: so much to learn. The upside for me is that there is so much to learn: literally, there are few dull moments. If you experience the upside, so much to learn, then you are in the right place.

good luck,

Hank
