Interesting point, I thought.
Interesting speculation. So why hasn't Turkey drifted that way? Would the other countries suffer from radical Islam if they had established themselves as democracies after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire? Would Sunni-dominated nations adopt the fundamentalist Shiite model, if free elections were allowed? So many questions!
