You could:

- create a number when you save the order instead of when you start editing. The drawback is that the user won't see the number before he actually saves the order.

- Only let one user add a new order at a time by keeping the record locked that you use for determining the next order number.

- Use different number schemes on each machine such as "A/0001, A/0001" on machine A, but "B/0001", etc. on machine B.
