>I'm heading down to Prince Edward County here in Ontario for the PEC Jazz Fest (gonna for sure see Oliver Jones and Jane Bunnett). It runs Aug 17-20, so that'll give me a couple of days of memories, and I'm ok with that.

He recently won an award for best Canadian Jazz album with Ranee Lee (who is a terrific singer), called "Just You Just Me". I love the album. I know you're not that big on singers, so you may not find it as good as I do. Anyway, Jones is about the next best thing to Oscar Peterson, and like Oscar, he's getting on and I don't think I'll get too many more chances to see him perform live, so I'm looking forward to it. But to answer your question, yes, he does mostly the trio stuff. Oscar did the trios too, and there isn't much that's better in the annals of Jazz than some of Oscar's trios. And it almost doesn't matter which of his trios you pick.

Jane Bunnett is a superb sax player who does mostly Latin jazz. I'm also looking forward to that. She brought Hilario Duran to Toronto (he lives here now) as well as a few others. I think she and Ry Cooder are probably two of the most important Latin influences around today. A lot of major Latin jazz artists come through here I think mainly because of her.

As you've probably figured out, the fest is mostly Canadian performers, but guys like David Braid on Piano, Guido Basso on flugelhorn, Mike Murley on Sax, Don Thompson on just about anything (he's world class on piano and vibes, but on the standup bass, I defy anybody to find anyone better - well, ok, maybe Niels-Henning Ørsted Pederson, but he's dead), and others can easily stand with any jazz performer in the world.
