But I have to find an accounting package that is cheap (the program this company is having me write will be distributed to 50+ franchises at almost no cost to the franchise and they do not want to have a high bill for the accounting package for each franchise) that I can communicate with using VFP.

PeachTree Complete Accounting is also a resonable accounting package if you need something that does a bit more than QuickBooks. It's actually a lot better than it used to be. It supports importing/exporting and DDE control. It has all the usual accounting stuff (A/R, A/P) plus Purchase Orders, Pick lists/Packing slips, job costing, inventory, and is multi-user (which QuickBooks FINALLY is) and custom reports.

But, depending on their accounting needs, Quickbooks may be a better alternative. I think it's easier to use than PeachTree and it's slanted more towards people who don't know much about accounting vs Peachtree which has a more formal accounting feel to it. I don't know if the new version of QuickBooks supports audit trails, though (which may or may not be important to your customer).
