These are definitely the lean times. I can't wait until my wife gets her masters of education, then the money will start rolling in.

College towns aren't as common up here. Universities and colleges tend to be established in the large urban centres. A village becomes a town when it gets a college and becomes and city when it gets a university. Probably a result of being public.
"Townies" makes be think of Breaking Away or Good Will Hunting.
