It could well be that the United States along with many (if not all) of the Allied Powers, were tired of war. We had a famous General named George Patton http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_S._Patton who wanted to arm the Germans after their surrender and help us defeat the Soviets. Politics was at play in the decision to allow the Soviets to occupy eastern Europe.
