Sounded like a network problem because the amout of data was not that large. The other advise you received was still useful and should be taken in to consideration.
Your network should be using switches instead of hubs, and should be gigabit links between switches. There are also some settings in SAMBA that can effect performance, but I can not help you with those :)
>well, mike, sergey, and robert, i've decided to take a better look @ my network here.

>i had thought earlier today that it was a network problem and simply restarted my server or the workstation, but that didn't do anything. Finally, after trying to fix this within foxpro, i went back to the network. i turned every workstation off, turned off the server, and unplugged the router. then i started from scratch.

>big difference. now the long query only takes about 1.5 seconds. i can deal with that. The problem was that most of my forms utilized this table that is stored on the server, so everything was slow and it was driving me crazy. i just noticed it today so i should have thought something was wrong other than my code, but i didn't understand the difference in time between the two queries. now i do.

>thanks for all your help. it's a shame that it was probably just a problem with the network and it needed a simple rebooting of everything, but i did learn something about how vfp works (ie nofilter), which is always good. i appreciate all your help.
