I use XML to pass data between tiers.

I also have an application where the spec said, "No dbfs" and not knowing what data store would be available, we opted for XML files. This is not a data entry app, but a data transformation app, where we take data in one format and convert it to another. That second format is then imported into a C++ application with a proprietary data format. THe XML files are used for configuration and processing rules.
