The only system I know that dealt with millions of records was the marvellous Ingres, the app itself was developed by 'moi'.
A few stats:
72 tables (not counting with 38 look-up tables)
number of records varying from 300000 up to 1800000.
Running on Sparc20 workstations with 128Mb very fast!
