If I may - your art is a big thing. This is, imo, something that should be a core issue in your life. It is fundamentally a creative process. It can apply to anything that we do, not just art. If a developer on this forum says they truly love their work I think you will find that they view software development not as work but as a creative process, like art in fact. They are creating something, not writing code. Truly creative activities are big things.

Think about it like this (which relates back to the original post) for most of us in as little as just 5 years, maybe much less, no one will remember the work that we have done today. A painting or sculpture that you make, on the other hand, might be admired and treasured for decades and decades either by your children, or their children, or art collectors, etc. I think that Steven Covey expresses it well when he says that everyone wants to live, to learn, to love, and to leave a legacy. Being a code jockey for some faceless corporation who will soon outsource you is not leaving a legacy :)
