Funny, I've done lots of face painting myself. I'm a big hit around Halloween. :-) I've always been a bit too deliberate with my artwork though, so I had to teach myself to think in a broader way, more impressionistic for things like sketching and face painting. It's actually made a big difference in my skill. I'm more able to think in terms of blocks of color, space, balance, etc, while still being able to pay attention to detail.
